Huge Turnout for Mather LifeWays Recycling Event Reveals Demand for Green Services
Wilmette, Ill. (May 3, 2012) – Despite the cold and dreary day, they came with old, unwanted televisions, VCR machines, computers, bottles of expired medication and sensitive documents like old tax returns and bank statements. In fact, they came in droves in what looked like a never-ending stream of people. All in all, the three-in-one recycling event at Mather Place of Wilmette on Saturday, April 28, was a huge success for community members who patiently waited their turn to responsibly dispose of old electronics, medications, and to shred sensitive documents, all in one place.
“In just one morning we shredded 12,700 pounds of paper, overflowed a 24-foot trailer truck with 8,000 pounds of electronics, and responsibly disposed of hundreds of pounds of prescription and over-the-counter medications,” said Drew Kowalski, Executive Director, Mather Place of Wilmette. “We were very pleased with the turnout. It’s obvious that providing a convenient place and time to recycle responsibly is much in-demand in our community,” he added.
In addition to the team at Mather Place of Wilmette, Secure EcoShred, PCRR Electronics Recycling, and LB MedWaste provided their services to make the event a success. Wilmette Boy Scout Troops 3 and 5 generously helped with the heavy lifting. Then, after dropping off their recyclables, participants were invited to warm up with refreshments and to tour Mather Place of Wilmette. One of the volunteer scouts, Jack Callahan, and his father, Dan Callahan, took the opportunity to visit with Jack’s grandfather, Pat Callahan, who is a resident at Mather Place of Wilmette.
Because of the overwhelmingly positive response to the recycling day, Mather Place of Wilmette is planning another, similar event sometime in the fall, with dates to be announced as soon as they become finalized.
