New Trier Rowers Win Big At Skokie Regatta

  • Name: New Trier Crew
  • School or league: New Trier High School
  • Award: Judge Dunne Invitational Regatta

New Trier rowers notched a series of impressive wins in the Judge Dunne Invitational Regatta in Skokie on Saturday, with the school’s women’s crews winning every race they entered.

The regatta, hosted by Loyola Academy, served as a tune-up for next Saturday’s Greater Chicago Junior Rowing Championships in Crystal Lake and the Midwest Scholastic Championships on May 14-15 in Cincinnati.

Five teams participated, including visiting crews from Michigan and Ohio. Competing on the Chicago River’s North Shore channel, the crews raced two at a time, a side-by-side format known as “Henley Style” racing. Strong headwinds challenged the crews during the day.

New Trier’s first and second women’s varsity eights each won two races on the 1,500-meter course, beating crews from Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Mich. and the St. Ursula Academy in Toledo, Ohio.

The third and fourth women’s varsity eights also won their races, defeating St. Ursula. The women’s first, second and third novice eights completed New Trier’s run.

New Trier women’s coach Rose Marchuk praised the first and second women’s eights for making adjustments in their second races, leading to faster times. (The second women’s eight was actually New Trier’s lightweight women’s eight, coached by Sandy Culver, which won a practice contest for the right to represent New Trier in this race.)

“They had to deal with some big wind gusts a couple times but were able to win both races and drop their times,” Marchuk said of the teams.

New Trier’s men’s first and second varsity eights also won both their races, defeating St. John’s Jesuit High School & Academy of Toledo and Ann Arbor Pioneer. Like the women’s team, the men improved their times in their second races.

“With the morning races we were able to learn something, and then get back on the water in the afternoon to show we were able to gain speed with experience,” said men’s coach Nate Kelp-Lenane.

The men’s novice boats also won races, defeating Loyola and St. John’s Jesuit. In another contest, New Trier’s lightweight eight beat its second novice eight.

New Trier began the day by dedicating a new 120-foot dock at is home base, the Dammrich Rowing Center in Skokie. The dock allows two eights, each about 60 feet long, to be launched or docked within seconds of each other.

John Neiweem, director of physical plant services and technology at New Trier, spent years making the dock a reality. In recognition of his efforts, one of New Trier’s four-person rowing shells was named in his honor.

The dock cost approximately $55,000 and was made possible by financial contributions of approximately $33,000 from New Trier Rowing Club parents and $22,000 from the Booster Club.
