C.J. Arthur’s, one of Wilmette’s few live music spots will be closing its doors at the end of the month after serving the North Shore for 23 years.

“They are leaving at the end of September, their last day will be Sept. 29,” said Martha Koch, property manager for the building at 1168 Wilmette Ave., where C.J. Arthur’s is currently located.

Since opening in 1983, Cindy, Jason and Art, co-owners of the bar, have been offering the community live music on a regular basis, according to C.J. Arthur’s website. The bar calls itself “Wilmette’s only nightlife!”

Patch was unable to reach the co-owners for comment.

A drugstore operated at the current C.J. Arthurs location for 97 years continuously before it closed. You can still see the beautiful old marble counter inside C.J. Arthurs, David Erch, Wilmette Historical Museum board member, previously told Patch during a historic Wilmette downtown stroll in June

Koch says they have not found a new tenant for the space but will be advertising for a restaurant.

“It’s set up for a restaurant, plus, Wilmette needs another restaurant,” Koch said.

Are you sad that C.J. Arthur’s will be soon closing? Do you think another restaurant should go in the space? If so, what type of restaurant?

Please, PLEASE! Before adding hateful comments, know that the owner has been diagnosed and is dying of a devastating disease. Tips, service, human errors don't really matter when you have a devastated family losing so very much all at once. PLEASE-let go of the superficial, and pray for the family.

Haha, I agree, it's always sad to see a local staple close up shop BUT it might be nice to have a restaurant there with edible food and a wait staff that doesn't chase you to your car screaming if you dont leave a good tip.

YES, I ALWAYS THINK BEFORE I COMMENT. WHEN YOU ARE IN A TIPPING ESTABLISHMENT, IF THE SERVICE IS BAD, YOU COMPLAIN TO THE MANANGEMENT, BUT STILL LEAVE A TIP, ALBEIT MUCH SMALLER SO THE SERVER GETS THE MESSAGE. IT IS UP TO MANAGEMENT TO DEAL WITH THE SITUATION, IF THEY DON'T THEN THE ESTABLISHMENT IS AT FAULT. AND IF THEY GO OUT OF BUSINESS IT IS THEIR OWN FAULT. YES I HAVE EATEN THERE ANT I HAVE TO SAY IT WAS MEDIOCRE AT BEST, I AGREE. BUT I FIND IT INTERESTING THAT THE MAJORITY OF THE BUSINESSES YOU MENTION ARE DOWNTOWN. HAVE YOU EVER PATRONIZED LINDEN SQUARE, WHO EVERYONE SEEMS TO AVOID? THERE ARE GREAT SERVICES THERE AND GOOD RESTAURANTS AND A SOON TO OPEN FABULOUS FOOD MART. SO DON'T GET ANGRY AT MY ANGER....IT IS WELL FOUNDED. I AM IN THE SERVICE BUSINESS FOR 35 YEARS IN WILMETTE AND I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE. I GIVE EXCELLENT, ABOVE AND BEYOND, PERSONAL SERVICE, AND AM STIFFED MOST OF THE TIME FROM YOUNG AND OLD. BUT THAT WILLLNEVER STOP ME FROM GIVING MY BEST, NO MATTER WHAT PEOPLE DO. BUT WHY SHOULD WE IN THE SERVICE INDUSTRY HAVE TO SUFFER BEACUSE OTHERS ARE WATCHING THIER MONEY WHEN TIPS ARE OUR ACTUAL INCOME, BEING PAID MINIMUM WAGE. THAT....IS THE REASON FOR MY ANGER. AND UNLESS YOU DON'T DEPEND ON TIPS TO PUT FOOD IN YOUR MOUTH AND PAY YOUR BILLS, DON'T TALK TO ME.

JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF WILMETTE RESIDENTS NOT SUPPORTING THEIR LOCAL BUSINESSES. AND IF THEY HAVE TO CHASE YOU OUT OF THE RESTAURANT FOR A TIP, WHY DIDN'T YOU LEAVE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. TIPS ARE THEIR INCOME, DID YOU KNOW? SHAME ON YOU AND WILMETTE. I WORK IN WILMETTE AND GET STIFFED A LOT. LOOK OUT, BIG BLACK DOG, YOU'RE NEXT!

They got a bad tip because the service was TERRIBLE! how about that Toni. If you were given terrible service and had food that came out cold because your waiter was NOWHERE to be found would you give a good tip? Shame on me? Shame on the guy who expected to get a decent tip after being a completely incompetent waiter. Also, there is NO excuse for bad food. I support all sorts of local businesses that are not sub par. Why would I support a local business that is generally rude, and has a less then decent product? I love Gilson's, and Walker Brothers will ALWAYS have my business, because they are GREAT establishments with good service and amazing food. Same with Depot Nuevo. Have you even ever been to C.J. Arthur's? I feel like you havn't Wilmette residents support their local businesses just fine, look at how well Bobtail Ice Cream has been doing, and the Wilmette Theater is always got people in it. Just because Wilmette people dont want to waste money on one of the few places in this town that is really lacking doesn't mean we dont support our local businesses. Who are you to say something like that? Did you even think before you angrily typed a comment here?

oh my gosh really? I DID say something and I DID leave a reduced (but present) tip. CJ Arthurs has had notoriously bad service for as long as I can remember and I cant believe it's taken this long for them to close up shop. No one is saying that the service industry should suffer, I'm not sure where you got that. Also, why does it matter that those places are down town, yeah, because its "the down town" of Wilmette, where the restaurants are, but yes, I live next to Linden Square, Wah Mei, JP McArthy's, the Comix Store is a staple and I've been going to Mrs. D's for years, both places have great service and I always leave a good tip when I eat at D's, that is a place that knows service. I dont know why your so mad about tipping, all I was saying is that I had terrible service at CJs and I tipped accordingly but their eployee decided he deserved more and chased me out of the restaurant yelling, that's not acceptable ANYWHERE under ANY circumstance. You just seem to be mad about people who don't tip which isn't what this is about at all, it's about a sub par establishment with sub par service, not your chosen profession or people who dont tip you. Also we wont know if that food mart is fabulous until it opens, (though it looks good)... just sayin.

Toni, the use of ALL CAPS to comment on a story is the equivalent of screaming. You don't like Wilmette or its residents and aren't shy about it. And you wonder why you get stiffed? For the record, I tip 20 percent for competent service, 25 percent for good service.

We liked CJ's when our kids were younger. Since then, the quality of the food and the service fell, while the prices rose. Still, I'm sorry to see it close. It was kind of an institution.

Went there twice, the owner was a total jerk and the food SUCKED!! The dump should have closed 20 years ago. Glad they are done.

People are not shy to say bad things. I was programmed to be polite even if I don't like something. It hurts my feelings that the place is closing without the blessings its own community. They sure had good music. People raved about CJ Arthur's, they did have good food, and we're nice people. I met the owner, what a nice man. :) God Love You CJ Arthur's.

I"m a musician who has performed at CJ Arthur's many times. We were always treated well by the owners and the staff, so I must disagree strongly with the negative comments posted here. Wilmette needs a place like CJ Arthur's, and they will be missed.

CJ Arthur's was a place where you could hear a wide range of good live music. They also served food and drinks. That's how I thought of them. A music place with food.

There are very few places these days where you can hear live music on a regular basis without a ticket. Readers would do me a kindness to fill me in on where I can locally go to hear jazz, blues, folk, karaoke, etc. without a ticket and grab a bite and beer with my friends while I'm at it.

Their food wasn't reviewable, but certainly edible and decent enough. There are plenty of "good food" options around if that was your goal for the evening. As for service, I mostly was content. On one or two occasions, it took a very long time.

I am sorry to hear they are closing and hope that whoever comes in their place will come with live music. Or perhaps other restaurants in town can step up to the plate. Violin, mariachi, jazz, whatever, acoustic guitar, whatever. Just give us a place to go where we can enjoy what CJ Arthurs will no longer be providing.

To Catherine Howard:

The article should have been more specific as to why they were closing, due to illness, instead of making it sound like they were just closing for who knows why. Then I'm sure there may have beens negative comments. But it still seems like a lot of people were not satisfied there.

It really was not my news to break, but I just felt someone had to-and I am the BIG MOUTH!
I am all for freedom of speech. My heart just aches to think of the suffering they are going through, and felt I needed to say something.
Full disclosure-I am close with this family, but have spent hundreds of nights there-paying full price--and have many wonderful memories there.
I just would like to hear some of the good times. The family has contributed in many ways to Wilmette outside the restaurants.
It has always been important for them to sit down and REALLY engage with the customers-that always made it homey for me-but of course, maybe people like me-blabbing with the staff-caused other's orders to be delayed!
I am not a family spokesman, and was not in any way trying to ask for pity comments.
The truth is always the best, and we all have our own. I appreciate the reply and hope to see some fun memories along with the not-so-fun, that's all.
Thank you so much for responding. God Bless the Falzer family. Catherine

I am incredibly sorry to hear that CJArthur's needs to close due to a family tragedy. Like it or not, it had tremendous character and will part of Wilmette lore for many years to come. God bless Art, Cindy, and Jason as well as all the loyal staff that will be displaced by this sad turn of events....

CJ Aruthurs was a fun place to go with family and friends. The
food was not bad,and they had great local bands. Why make such rude comments.
A family has to close a business and many people will lose their jobs.

I agree the rude and mean comments are soooooo unappropriate. CJ Aruthur's was/is a good family friendly resturaunt with good entertainment.
Many people are going to loose their jobs and a family is closing a family owned business in a time when jobs are hard to come by in a not so good econmey.
Think about what you say before you say such mean things and put yourself in the shoes of the people you are bad mouthing and think about how you would feel to have someone say things like that to you.
CJ's will be missed!

Seriously? They were in NO WAY rude. They were the truth. All people were saying was that it was a bad restaurant with bad service and the fact that it had great live music and a full bar was what made up for that. Its no disrespectful to have an opinion about bad food, especially when the majority of people agree. Sad to hear about family problems and health but this Isn't the venue for those topics, this is a venue to discuss the merits or lack their of of a local business closing, it doesn't matter for what reason, plus, if your getting into it like that, I've heard from just as many sources that they were in fact having troubles with the landlord and could no longer afford the rent due to a decrease in customers and that's why they closed, not because of health. But again, thats not the point. The point is this is a coment section of a local news source for people to discuss how they feel about the issues put forth by the writers. I feel like it'll be good to see a change in ownership there because I FEEL like that place was not worth visiting due to poor service and bad food, because personally I could care less about the live music and bar. But thats my opinion, obviously some people disagree with that and thats fine but I am baffled by everybody's need to make this personal. This isn't about people or family its about a tired business and it's time to let someone else step up. Why can't we be excited about the new place that will open there? I know I am!

Magila, here's why your comments were rude. The restaurant is CLOSING FOREVER. It's not as if you're offering constructive criticism for improvement- all you're doing is getting digs in for no reason. Gratuitous and indicative of what a piece of crap you are. Watch out, karma has a way of coming back around- hope it remembers you. By the way, based on a couple of places you mentioned that impress you, I sure wouldn't take any recommendations from your dumb butt.

I have gone to CJ Arthur's for years now. They had decent Food at an affordable price, friendly staff and live music on a regular basis. It was a casual atmosphere, family friendly and always welcoming. I will miss the music, the food and the staff. I also took a look at the work that needed to be done on the premises a year ago. It was more than cosmetic, there are major problems with the building, structural, plumbing, sewer, etc, etc., and it appears that the owners of the property were unwilling to address any of these issues and then went for an increase in rent. The Village of Wilmette needs to go in and do a thorough inspection after the close and require the owners to make the repairs that they have refused to do or deny any permits and/or licenses for the premises in the future.

I AGREE, THE VILLAGE NEEDS TO ADDRESS BUILDING CODE ISSUES. THESE OWNERS MILK THE PROPERTIES AND RAISE OUR RENTS AND WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE REPAIR ISSUES CONSTANTLY. AND THE OWNERS SOME OF THE LINDEN SQUARE PROPERTIES ARE NO DIFFERENT. SHODDY SPACES, AND FULL OF CODE VIOLAATIONS. VILLLAGE OF WILMETTE....ARE YOU LISTENING?????

The food was horrible and the service was worse. There have been countless times where I would drive to the bank see the staff getting high in the back, no wonder the service was so bad. I stopped allowing my children to go there once I heard about Jasons preferred taste in younger girls....I shouldn't have to worry about a man in his thirties flirting with my 15 year old daughter at this so called "family" establishment. I'm glad its leaving, hopefully we can get a quality establishment now.

Actually, Jason was not the "J" in CJ Arthurs. Jason was still in diapers, then. The original partner was Cindy's brother, Jeff. When Jeff left, I feel the food quality went down. But that is just my opinion.

Anyone who says Cindy and Art are bad people have either not met them, or have their heads up their rear's. They both loved the business and their customers and did NOT treat customers rudely or poorly.

Godspeed Art & Cindy. We will miss you guys.

If you were BORN and RAISED in Wilmette you would be sad to see C.J. Arthur's close. It was a good place to get a drink and some food without any fuss. I will be sad to see them go. Maybe if these greedy landlords would take care of their properties the tenants would have more money and time to spend on their businesses i.e. staff, food, management. Shame on the people who left rude comments here. You have no class, clearly you have not lived here long.

CJ Arthur's Regulars who must justify the large quantity of time they spent there by shooting down any and all criticism
People who went to CJ's on an extremely busy night and expected the best service
People who can't appreciate casual restaurants.
People who thought it was ok or something.

I grew up in Wilmette, and CJ Arthur's was always our go-to for breakfast or lunch after softball games, soccer practice or sleepovers. It was a family place where you'd always run into friends from school or neighbors. It was also one of the places my friends and I were allowed to go on our own, and we felt so grown up dining there by ourselves as kids. It was so easy to walk there after school from Central or bike there from our East Wilmette homes. It's a memorable part of my childhood, and though the quality and service certainly went down in recent years, I'm terribly sad to see a longstanding Wilmette business close. I'm disappointed with this article, as it doesn't provide any valuable information and it doesn't seem the reporter has any background knowledge of the restaurant. I would never classify it as a "bar" or live music venue rather than a family restaurant, and the line "It’s set up for a restaurant, plus, Wilmette needs another restaurant" implies it wasn't a restaurant at all. It also seems like a low-blow to include a quote about how the community needs a new restaurant in an article about a restaurant closing. And no quotes or information from the actual restaurant owners? No insight into why it closed after 23 years? You don't even include the co-owners last name, which is Reporting 101. As a journalist and a Wilmette native, I can firmly say this is poor reporting and it's extremely disappointing.

This place was a treasure to the community. It was the only place that was truly alive each night, with all the live music they shared. This family was a real blessing to this community and all who live here. It was the best.
