Coast Guard Rescues Chicago Man in Wilmette
The 18-year-old Chicago man was rescued off a breakwall at Gillson Park Wednesday.
An 18-year-old Chicago man was rescued from drowning in Lake Michigan by U.S. Coast Guard boat crews stationed at the Wilmette Harbor Wednesday, the Chicago Tribune reports.
The man had been "struggling off a breakwall at Gillson park near the 700 block of North Michigan Avenue," according to the Tribune.
(Earlier: Wilmette Fire Department evacuated a resident from his home due to a gas leak.)
Wilmette firefighters, who initially arrived at the scene at 6:30 p.m., couldn't access the man and called the Coast Guard for assistance. "It took only about four minutes for Coast Guard rescuers members aboard a 25-foot response boat out of Station Wilmette Harbor to get to the man," the Tribune reports.

I was fishing in Wilmette Harbor when the coast guard rescue boat flew out of the harbor toward the rescue area. Lucky guy! Nice job! I hope your funds aren't cut by that group of fools in Washington. We're all in trouble then.

The guy was either swimming in the "no swimming or wading" area or jumping off of the pier. When I worked down there we had a staff member stationed on the pier to kick these guys out of the park. Apparently they don't do monitor the pier anymore.
