Do You Think Backyard Chickens Should be Legalized in Wilmette?
New Trier High School junior Zan Fisher recently requested the Village of Wilmette host a hearing on backyard chickens. Add your thoughts and vote in our poll.
We've received several comments on the pros and cons of backyard chickens and now we want to know: Do you think backyard chickens should be legalized in Wilmette?
The discussion started when we posted a story Monday about New Trier High School junior Zan Fisher requesting the Village of Wilmette host a hearing on backyard chickens.
Margaret Lamason worte on Winnetka-Glencoe Patch:
Good for you Zan Fisher! My niece and nephew have them in Winnetka and it has been a great learning experience for all of us. My brother and sister-in-law built a nice little house for them and somehow the neighbors co-exist and, daresay enjoy them. Plus we all enjoy the eggs. (Unfortunately, the first round of them were prey for the neighborhood fox but hopefully the new "family" will avoid that tragic end).

This is not a farm community and I'd hate to wake up to the sounds of a chicken being eaten by a racoon.

We raised chickens when we lived within the city limits of Atlanta, GA and it was a wonderful experience in many ways. My and the neighborhood children learned where some of their food came from; my children learned responsibility by caring for the chickens; and we reaped and shared the benefits of the delicious eggs! (They are much better than the store-bought variety.) While we did lose some life to a raccoon and to "the pecking order," these experiences provided valuable lessons about life and death. I am fully supportive of backyard chickens in Wilmette.
