Falling Tree Hits Car Carrying Family of Six, Two Injured

High wind speeds may have caused the tree to fall.

A large tree fell on a car carrying a family of six Friday morning, injuring two people, police said.

A Ford Freestyle was traveling northbound on 16th Street at approximately 10:55 a.m., when a large tree fell and struck the vehicle as it approached the stop sign at Wilmette Avenue.

The Wilmette Fire Department had to extricate one person from the vehicle by cutting the door and raising the tree with a jack.

Police said the tree fell from the southwest corner of the intersection. It is unclear what caused the tree to drop, but Walsh said weather conditions were “pretty windy”.

The car and debris from the accident have since been remove from the intersection, police said.
