Holding their hands on their hearts, a crowd of people stood silent as the body of John T. Larimer, who was killed in the Colorado movie shooting Friday, July 20, was brought back to his hometown of Crystal Lake.

American flags lined the sidewalk as his body was escorted to Davenport Family Funeral Home by members of the Illinois Old Guard, Warriors Watch and Illinois Patriot Guard. The procession included three police cars, more than 40 motorcycles, as well as a limousine and several other vehicles.

The procession began at O’Hare International Airport at 2 p.m. and made its way throughout the Northwest suburbs, ending at the funeral home.

A brief ceremony took place outside, just as rain began to fall. The casket, adorned with an American flag, was then brought inside.

Larimer was a Petty Officer 3rd Class with the U.S. Navy. He was one of 12 people killed as he shielded Julia Vojtsek of Algonquin, during the massacre at the Century 16 Movie Theater.

The alleged gunman, James Holmes, 24, dressed in combat gear, kicked in the back door of the theater and began shooting.

Larimer was a 2003 graduate of Crystal Lake South High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June 2011, and was assigned to Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, Col. in October 2011.

Visitation for Larimer is scheduled today from 3 to 9 p.m. at Davenport Family Funeral Home, in Crystal Lake. The funeral and interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the John T. Larimer Memorial Fund, in care of Citibank, 225 W. Virginia Ave., Crystal Lake, according to the funeral home.
