Letter to the Editor: Thank The Fire Department this Season
Firefighters don't get the holidays off.
The following is a letter to the editor from Adam L. of Wilmette.
While we are celebrating the holidays with our family and friends, it is important to remember those who cannot. Instead of spending time with friends and family, firefighters are celebrating with their second family, their fellow firefighters.
Most of us are lucky not to need the assistance of the Wilmette Fire Department, but it is important to remember that they are always available for the residents of Wilmette. They're happy to help with something as simple as resetting a fire alarm to something as intricate as administering top quality medical care to a person having a medical emergency. Firefighters risk their lives for others every single day they go to work. Please take some time this holiday season to thank the fire department for all they do.

They are not the only ones, police, clerks, ... all work on New Years Day.
Technically you are not correct, many firemen will have the day off because of schedule or vacation days. Technically we all risk our lives every minute of the day. Fighting fires is difficult, dangerous work, but all of those sedentary hours spent in the firehouse might be just as dangerous as a 3-alarm blaze.
Do not get me wrong, I am glad we have the firemen (and police) that we have. Just be fair to the unsung Metra workers, too.
To turn this political, many cities are combining police & fire so they do both jobs to save money and make the job more interesting.
