Loyola Sports Roundup: Baseball, Softball Make Final Preparations for Postseason

Girls soccer capped another undefeated week while girls lacrosse edged New Trier.

Girls Lacrosse: Within the state of Illinois, Loyola Academy has rarely been challenged this season. But the two-time defending state champions always know their mid-season matchup with New Trier will always provide a stern test.

Behind Meg Perhaus’ 4 goals and a late score from Molly Hulseman, Loyola edged its rival, 12-11 on Wednesday.

“It was a great win. Definitely the two best teams in Illinois played tonight and it was a display of how good the quality of lacrosse has gotten at the top end in the state of Illinois,” Loyola coach John Dwyer said. “That’s a great rival for us.”

Baseball: Loyola continues its impressive late-season run with a 3-2 week against stiff competition. After defeating Bishop McNamara, the Ramblers won a slugfest with Glenbrook South, 15-12. John Rafferty was 4-for-4 with two RBIs for Loyola. Matt Fallon went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.

But the offense failed to come through the following day as the Ramblers were swept in a double header with Brother Rice. Loyola lost the first game, 2-0, and were edged in the nightcap, 3-2.

Still, Loyola rebounded to defeat No. 4 Mount Carmel, 6-4, on May 4. Jack Richmond gave Loyola a spark, tossing a three-hit complete game victory. Richmond also struck out five for the Ramblers.

The Ramblers received the No. 10 seed in the IHSA Class 4A Glenview Sectional.

Softball: With some good weather, Loyola was able to get in seven games over the past week. The Ramblers went 3-4, defeating Glenbrook North, Taft and Niles North. Sarah Conway went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run in Loyola’s 8-5 victory versus Glenbrook North.

Loyola was awarded the No. 8 seed in the IHSA Class 4A Winnetka Sectional.

Girls Soccer: The Ramblers (18-0-3) continue to run through the regular season undaunted, posting another undefeated week. Loyola clinched the Catholic Cup title with a 1-0 victory over Fenwick last weekend. Laura Gardner scored the game’s lone goal on an assist from Grace Smith.

The Ramblers also clinched their third straight conference title after defeating Trinity, 5-0, on Monday. Gardner had a had trick and an assist for Loyola.
