Some Residents Want Affordable Housing As Part of Wilmette Development

Housing advocates say affordable units should be part of the plans for 611 Green Bay Road.

Elizabeth Drake, a Wilmette resident for more than 20 years, says plans for 611 Green Bay Road should include an affordable housing component, Chicago Tribune reported.

In December, Chicago real estate developer Lexington Homes agreed to purchase the site of a former Ford dealership for $4 million, with plans to build a new six-story mixed-use development

There’s no sign that affordable housing is in the plans for 611 Green Bay Road and Winnetka President Christopher Canning says he’s received only two communications about affordable housing, but housing advocates say it’s up to the village to push for affordable units in the plan, Chicago Tribune reported.

The village purchased the one-acre parcel, which formerly housed a Ford dealership, in the spring of 2011 for $3.675 million. At the time, Village Board members said they viewed the property as a crucial piece to revitalizing the village center, saw the purchase as a first step in the then-recently-adopted master plan and wanted the property to be turned into a multi-purpose space.
