Wilmette Blotter: Money Stolen From Dead Man's Wallet
The following incidents were reported between Aug. 8 and 15 to Wilmette police.
A Winnetka man driving along the 1400 block of Sheridan Road at 10:10 p.m. Aug. 13 reported that two youths were throwing objects at cars. The man told police an object struck his car window. and he chased them on foot. The youths were last seen running from the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and Sheridan Road. There was no damage to the car.
A man reported that gasoline was stolen from his car between 8 p.m. Aug. 11 and 11:40 p.m. Aug. 12. His 1989 Honda Civic was parked at the corner of Briar Drive and Old Glenview Road. The man said he found his fuel tank cover slightly ajar and half of his tank empty. The man told police he suspects a former high school classmate in the theft.
A woman reported that $80 was stolen form her deceased boyfriend's wallet betwen July 3 and 17. The woman had kept the wallet in memory of her boyfriend and suspects that her daughter had taken the money.
Jewelry worth $25,000 was reported stolen from a home in the 1400 block of Maple Avenue between 2 p.m. Aug. 12 and 2:45 p.m. Aug. 14. Entry was apparently made through a window.
Martian-type figures were found graffitied on the west court of Wilmette Junior High School, 620 Locust Rd., on Aug. 10. Two days before the damage, symbols were drawn on the east court.
An officer driving near the corner of Pinecrest Lane and Washington Avenue around 11 p.m. Aug. 9 discovered a four-foot red devil spray painted on a detached garage. The officer notified the resident and took photos of the image.
A cartoon penguin figure was found graffitied on the wall of McKenzie Elementary School, 649 Prairie Ave., on Aug. 9 at 11:22 p.m. The penguin was similar to the devil graffiti found that same night at a different location.
A 29-year-old Chicago woman was stopped in the 3500 block of Lake Avenue at 3:39 a.m. Aug. 10 because her headlights were out. A police check revealed that she was driving without a valid registration, had no insurance and was operating the car on a suspended license. She was subsequently arrested and charged.
A 22-year-old Wilmette man was arrested in the 1200 block of Richmond Avenue on charges of unlawful discharge of an air rifle on Aug. 11. The man, who shot a paintball gun into the air, received a citation.
A 19-year-old Glenview man as arrested at the Wilmette Metra station, 722 Green Bay Rd., on charges of resisting a peace officer and felony theft. It was later discovered that he was in possession of drug paraphernalia and had an outstanding warrant for theft in Winnetka.
Police stopped a 33-year-old Michigan man in the 400 block of Hibbard Road who was soliciting for magazine and newspaper subscriptions on Aug. 9. The man was given a citation for soliciting without permit, and it was later discovered that he had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court on traffic offenses. The man was taken into custody.
BURGLARY to MOTOR VEHICLE
A car parked in the 100 block of Ridge Road was burglarized between 11 p.m. Aug. 7 and 8:40 a.m. Aug. 8. A Kindle valued at $200 and a leather messenger bag valued at $50 were taken. The car was unlocked in the resident's driveway.
DUI HIT and RUN
A 39-year-old Wilmette man was arrested after striking a light pole in the 1300 block of Wilmette Avenue around 11 p.m. Aug. 14. The subject had fled the scene, but a witness directed police to the driver's damaged vehicle. Further investigation revealed the man had been driving under the influence of alcohol.
