The picture shows a tree trunk still standing on it's own. The title says the tree is lost. Can the remaining part survive for many more years?

So how do they know when the tree started growing?
Did they do a core sample and count the rings?
Did it tie to some event in the life of local residents?
Anton Ouilmette's wife's family?
