It's Time for a Post-Holiday Coffee Talk

Betsy and Sal want to know how your holidays went, what gifts you got, what you liked a latte and want to venti about. So grab a cup of joe and join their post-holiday coffee talk.

The wrapping paper has been recycled.  The tree’s at the curb and the menorah is back in its cupboard. So what we want to know is this: Is your coffee-mug half full or half empty? In other words, what did you like a latte? What do you want to venti about? Did you get something grande? Or, are you pouting because you got a skinny, no foam, non-fat, decaffeinated cup of what-the-joe-is-this? We want to establish an early disclaimer: We loved everything we got. Oh yes we did. All of the stories forthwith were relayed to us by “friends.”  Okay. Wait. Before we recount the holiday highs and lows of others, allow us to confess to our own personal moments of celebratory gluttony, because with every cup of coffee, there’s always a little nosh.  …

10 Worst Holiday Foods

Your grocery store is a mine field of holiday horrors.

Fudge Dipped Ritz Crackers - So. Deliciously. Wrong. These are crispy, salty, and delicious. Wait - that's bacon. You won't be able to put this down, either. Pretend you can't read the nutrition information. You don't need to know.  Kefir Cranberry Brulee Probiotic Drink - Nothing says intestinal health like ruining the memory of your favorite dessert and a common holiday flavor at the same time. Extra bonus - this probably works as an appetite suppressant.  Candy Cane Shot Glass - Imagine an Australian crushing a steel can of beer against his skull. You're not that guy, but you can still freak people out if you eat your shot glass before you reveal it's actually made from candy.  Non-alcoholic Southern Comfort Eggnog - Anything with …

Dealing With Divorce Around the Holidays

How to bridge the gap between your children's Christmas fantasy and reality.

I am continually impressed with the folks around this town. The other day I witnessed two men strike up a conversation while waiting in line at the coffee shop. The younger man (early 30s) let it be known that he had recently separated from his wife. The older gentleman (45 tops) told him that he had been divorced for a several years, and invited his new friend to sit down and converse further on the subject.  That's cool, but the impressive part was the tone of their conversation. Contrary to my expectations, it was far from spiteful or angry. Rather than misogynistic ex-wife bashing, the two men calmly talked about how to quickly and amicably advance through the pending divorce proceedings. Why? For the sake of their children. Say what …

Photo Gallery: Wilmette Rotary Club Gathers 15,000 Books for Drive

Several parochial and charter schools will receive the books from Thursday through Monday.

The Rotary Club of Wilmette will be sending 15,000 books to inner-city schools this week as a result of its annual drive. "These books go to charter and private schools in the city that have reading programs." said Maurice Ann Sullivan, a Rotary club member, "They give kids a chance to get their reading levels up." Several parochial and charter schools in Chicago's Pilsen and Little Village communities, including St. Agnes of God, San Miguel, Catalyst 1, Catalyst 2, Catalyst 3, Catalyst 4 and St. Procopius School, participate in the exchange. Volunteers and Rotary members have been collecting books since Oct. 1. After being gathered, books are separated amongst reading levels, from kindergarten to high school. "We have members assigned to…

Photo Gallery: Tree Lighting Kicks off Holiday Season

Wilmette boasts more bulbs on its holiday tree than Mayor Daley's, according to Village President Chris Canning.

Friday night's holiday festivities shed "greener" light on a Wilmette tradition. The annual holiday tree lighting featured more than three times the bulbs and less than 1/30 of the watt usage, according to village officials. "It's fun to live in a small town and see friends at events like this—that's what I enjoy," said Caryn Kelly, a five-year resident who had never attended the event before. Kelly was accompanied by her daughters Lauren, 5, and Amelia, 8. "It was wonderful, we liked the tree a lot." It's not just residents who come to check out the lights. Bill Westfall, who lives in Glenview, has watched the tree lighting for five years. "Glenview doesn't have the good lights." Westfall said, "They don't have anything like this—this …
