St. Charles North 2, New Trier 1. The Trevians will play for third place in Class 4A against Benet Academy Saturday at 4:30 p.m. after a stunning semifinal loss Friday.
EAST PEORIA – A rally in the top of the sixth inning to tie Friday’s Class 4A state semifinal game against St. Charles North kept New Trier’s hopes of winning the program’s first state title alive. Moments later, however, that hope ended in shocking fashion. With the score tied at 1-1 and one out in the bottom of the seventh, St. Charles North’s Annie Korth jumped on the first Brigit Leuter offering and crushed it out to dead center to push the North Stars into the state title game against Moline. New Trier will play for third place at 4:30 p.m. at East Side Centre in East Peoria against Benet Academy, who lost to Moline, 5-3, in the other semifinal game. “Stunned,” New Trier coach John Caldwell said of his team’s mood after the game. “Our…

Molly Morrison's double in the eighth inning scored Chelsea Delaney to give New Trier its first Super-Sectional title since 2008.
On a day where temperatures reached into the mid-90s, the idea of being doused with water probably didn’t sound too bad to New Trier coach John Cadwell. And it was only that much sweeter when it came with a Super-Sectional championship. New Trier rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the sixth inning to force extras and Molly Morrison came up with the game-winning RBI double in the eighth to cap a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory for the Trevians against Lake Zurich in the IHSA Class 4A Glenview Super-Sectional. “A lot of it has to do with attitude and stuff and it all comes from Dave Snyder, the assistant coach,” said Morrison, a junior catcher. “He really works on how we approach things, our mental game, and I think that’s pulled us through in …

New Trier took advantage of four Glenbrook South errors and Brigit Ieuter was dominant on the mound.
New Trier pitcher Brigit Ieuter hadn’t been called for an illegal pitch all season. So when six of them were called against Ieuter in the sectional championship game on Saturday afternoon, it would’ve been easy for the junior right-hander to become unglued and irritated. But New Trier’s ace persevered, tossing a complete-game one-hitter, helping New Trier to an 8-1 victory over Glenbrook South in the IHSA Class 4A Winnetka Sectional championship game. “I give our girls a lot of credit and I give Brigit a lot of credit because she really kept her composure when it’s easy to become a little unnerved given those calls on the illegal pitches,” New Trier coach John Cadwell said. The illegal pitches were only part of a strange, error-filled game…

Girls lacrosse advances to another state title game while baseball's underdog run came to an end.
Baseball: Despite their low sectional seed and a sub-.500 record, Loyola proved that they belong among the state’s elite teams. The Ramblers upset Notre Dame, 6-0, in the regional semifinals behind the dominant pitching of Jack Richmond, who threw a complete-game three-hit shutout. Richmond struck out seven batters in seven innings for Loyola. John Rafferty was the offensive hero, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and three RBIs. Loyola came back the next day and handed Glenbrook South, the Central Suburban League South champion, only its ninth loss of the season, 8-2. The Ramblers again got great pitching, this time from Danny Rafferty, who threw a complete game and struck out 13 batters. Max Hogan went 2-for-4 with a double, …

Volleyball's season ended in the regional finals while girls lacrosse got a big win in the playoffs.
Girls Soccer: For all of Loyola’s (23-0-3) accomplishments over the last four years – two Pepsi Showdown titles, conference championships and school records in wins – a deep postseason run isn’t part of the resume. The Ramblers haven’t won a sectional championship, losing to New Trier in the sectional final the last two seasons. But after taking care of business against Mather and Maine West in the regional and defeating Evanston, 3-0, in the sectional semifinals, Loyola will have yet another chance for redemption. The Ramblers will face New Trier on Friday night at Evanston. Laura Gardner had the first Rambler goal against Evanston while scores from Colleen McShane and Annie Manganaro sealed the victory. Carly Stevens now has 23 shutouts…
