PHOTO GALLERY: Cook County Ag Day at Glenview's Wagner Farm

Third graders learn about tractors, crops and livestock.

For two days, historic Wagner Farm, in collaboration with the Cook County Farm Bureau, played host to nearly 700 area third grade students for Agriculture Day late last month. National Ag Day is actually March 15th, which falls during National Ag Week, March 13th-19th. Due to cold March weather, Wagner Farm and the Farm Bureau decided to postpone Ag Day until April. Students found soggy, muddy ground when they arrived but it didn't dampen their excitement to see the enromous farming equiptment, sheep, pigs, cows and chickens.  For the Farm Bureau, Ag Day is an opportunity to teach students about different areas of agriculture and some of Illinois' biggest commodities.  This was the second time Wagner Farm and the Cook County Farm Bureau …

Wilmette-Kenilworth's Got Talent: Ian Pappas

Loyola Academy Percussionist is King of Competitions.

Percussionist Ian Pappas isn’t big on self-aggrandizement. Whereas many musicians would consider a performance at Carnegie Hall to be the apex of their life’s work, the Loyola Academy student discusses it as you or I would pontificate about a trip to the laundromat. Pappas was selected through faculty recommendation and an audition tape to play at the American High School Honors Performance Series at the venerable New York institution on Feb. 19. Pappas' band director, Corey Ames, said that each music faculty member can nominate up to five students for the performance. “Ian is one of the best musicians I’ve ever known at the High School level,” said Ames, who directs Pappas in Loyola Academy's Symphonic Band. “He’s constantly entering …

Wilmette-Kenilworth's Got Talent: Solena Rizzato

Check out a local, 8th grade violist, vocalist and composer.

“My entire iPod is classical music," said Solena Rizzato, an eight-grade student at Marie Murphy Junior High School. When a blue-haired opera attendee speaks such words, one may not flinch. When uttered by a junior high student, however, eyebrows surely raise in response. But Rizzato is not your typical teen. “In fourth grade, my teachers, Nancy Magill and Eugenia Meltzer, really inspired me and challenged me to play viola." Rizzato said, "It was actually supposed to be a punishment because I was a second chair violin and I kept begging to be first chair." The 'punishment' has become a promise; Rizzato currently plays viola in the Marie Murphy Senior Strings Orchestra under the baton of Mary Rudzinski. Today, in addition to being a singer…

Photo Gallery: Kiss FM Co-hosts Students' Battle of the Bands

Wilmette Junior High School's annual Battle of the Bands showcases talented young musicians

A blizzard and sub-zero temperatures couldn't keep local junior high students from performing for their peers at Wilmette Junior High School's 2011 Battle of the Bands Friday night. The annual event, sponsored by Wilmette Youth Connection and KISS 103.5 FM, went off without a hitch despite the region's distressing weather conditions. The competition highlighted five local acts, made up of students in grades 5 through 8. The students played cover songs from the 1960s through present day, covering styles from funk and heavy metal. Some blossoming artists even played original compositions. Four bands played during the event: Triple A, Silent, Irish Pub and Speed of Sound, while a solo guitarist and singer, Jordan Xidas, rounded out the …
