Directly in the middle of the uneasy intersection between national freedom and national security are  the first amendment guarantees to speech and the press. This program covers the origins of these two rights, from the English radicals and the French Enlightenment down through the early years of the American Republic, when our nation struggled to decide if freedom of expression was simply too costly.  Presented by Joyce Haworth.
