Cook County Board of Review Property Assessment Appeals Open August 30th

New Trier Township property owners have a second opportunity to appeal the 2013 reassessed value of their property. Even those who have already appealed their assessment to the Cook County Assessor have the right to appeal again at the Cook County Board of Review. The appeals process begins Friday, August 30 and closes Monday, September 30. Reductions in assessed value received this year will hold for three years (until the 2016 reassessment year) and will first be reflected on the 2013 second installment bills, payable August 1, 2014.

The grounds for appeal, and the supporting data needed for each, are:

LACK OF UNIFORMITY WITH SIMILAR PROPERTIES

A list of homes in your class and neighborhood of similar size, construction and age with lower dollar-per-square-foot assessments.

ERROR IN SQUARE FOOTAGE OF HOME OR LOT

A survey and your calculations based on measurements of the exterior of the house, excluding basements, garages, unfinished attics and porches.

OVERVALUATION

A recent sale or appraisal showing that the assessment is more than 10% of the current market value of the property.

Forms and assistance with appeals are available in the Township Assessor’s Office. For a list of comparable homes, residents should call our office at 847-446-8200 and leave their name and address. Please specify whether you want to pick them up the next day or have us mail them to you. The necessary appeal forms will be included in any mailing.
