WILMETTE'S DR. JOSHUA JACOBS AMONG "TOP DOCTORS IN AMERICA"

Dr. Joshua J. Jacobs of Wilmette, a hip and knee replacement specialist with Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics Surgery at Rush Medical College, and President of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), was voted among the Top Doctors in America® by U.S. News & World Report and Castle Connolly, a healthcare research information company that recognizes physicians who have been nominated by their peers and rigorously screened by a physician-led research team. According to the research, Dr. Jacobs is considered by his peers to be among the top one percent of orthopedic specialists in the nation.
To prepare the list of top doctors, Castle Connolly receives input from leading physicians, chairs of clinical departments and presidents of medical institutions.  The researchers also query those doctors who have been recognized as “Top Doctors” in previous years.
The Top Doctors database is widely regarded as a high-quality reference guide to the medical profession. The list names National Top Doctors, considered among the top 1 percent of specialists in the nation and Regional Top Doctors, considered to be among the top 10 to 15 percent of doctors in the nation.  The searchable database lists more than 33,000 physicians across the country in more than 60 specialties and subspecialties.
As one of the leading authorities on hip and knee replacement surgery, Dr. Jacobs is especially interested in the materials used for prosthetic devices and has conducted research and published extensively on this topic. He has consulting contracts with orthopedic implant manufacturers regarding the development, regulation and testing of certain spine, knee and hip implant devices.
Dr. Jacobs was named the William A. Hark, MD/Susanne G. Swift Professor at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and is an adjunct professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in the McCormick Technological Institute at Northwestern University.  Dr. Jacobs had served as chair of the Council on Research, Quality Assessment and Technology of the AAOS, past president of the Orthopaedic Research Society and past president of the United States Bone and Joint Decade. He also served as a trustee of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation and is past chair of Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices of the American Society for Testing and Materials International. Dr. Jacobs recently completed a four-year term on the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Advisory Council and has chaired multiple National Institute of Health study sections.
In addition to his dedication as a volunteer in the orthopedic education and research community, Dr. Jacobs has won several research awards including the Ann Doner Vaughan Kappa Delta Award from the AAOS and has published more than 200 peerreviewed manuscripts, co-edited five books and co-authored more than 35 book chapters. He has presented extensively at a variety of national and international continuing medical education venues.
