Community Corner

You're Invited to Celebrate Passover with Kol Hadash

Kol Hadash, a Humanistic Jewish congregation on the North Shore, is hosting its annual community seder on the second night of Passover, Tuesday, April 15 at the Bluegrass Restaurant, 1636 Old Deerfield Road in Highland Park, and is inviting all individuals and families in the community to join them.

"This seder is wonderful," said Ginger Green of Libertyville, who attended Kol Hadash's Seder last year for the first time. "Seders are usually a family thing. I'm not from the Chicago area and don't have any family here, so I was delighted to find a comfortable, compatible and friendly place where I could celebrate and feel at home."

The Kol Hadash Seder is a favorite among North Shore families. Using the The Liberated Haggadah: A Passover Celebration for Cultural, Secular, and Humanistic Jews by Rabbi Peter H. Schweitzer, all stories are told in English. The evening is filled with tradition, delicious food, wine and music.

"I have attended the Kol Hadash Seder for the last six years," comments David Hirsch from Deerfield. "It has become my family’s preferred way of celebrating Passover. We get to be together and share the seder with our congregational family and we don’t have worry about the cooking or clean up. We can recline and enjoy each other and the holiday!"

How is Kol Hadash's Seder Different from Other Seders?

o   In other seders, participants celebrate a mythical story as if it were true; in our seder, we acknowledge the story as myth but celebrate the values it represents.

o   In other seders, stories are told in a language many people do not understand; in our seder, stories are told in a language everyone understands... English!

o   In other seders, they attribute the outcome to the acts of a supernatural being; in our seder, we attribute the outcome to the actions of human beings.

Don't miss this chance to experience a meaningful Passover Seder with Rabbi Adam Chalom and enjoy a sumptuous family-style dinner with your Kol Hadash friends and family.
