Go Green Wilmette Teams Up With SWANCC, 350.org for Fall Events

Check out what's coming up on Wednesday night's meeting.

Go Green Wilmette is gearing up for two extremely important events in September. The first is part of the 's Greener Choices Series and will take place on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 7 p.m. Mary Allen, Recycling and Education Director for the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) will present a program called, “Choose to Be GREENer, Know Your Options.”  Since everything that we buy and use comes from our Earth’s resources, it is important to know the ways in which each person can reduce their carbon footprint through waste, energy and water reduction efforts, as well as careful purchases of goods and products to create a healthier environment for ourselves and the earth.

The second event, Go Green Wilmette’s 350.org's Moving Planet Rally, (moving-planet.org) takes place on September 24, 2011 from 2 - 4pm at . You will want to be a part of this exciting opportunity to join with communities all around the globe.  Come to the Wallace Bowl under your own steam-WALK, ROLL, RUN or BIKE.  Be there by 2 p.m. to enjoy activities for the whole family that will promote climate change solutions.  There will also be a reception from 5-6 p.m. at . For event details, visit: gogreenwilmette.org.

On October 10, 2010, (350.org) coordinated 7,400 different actions in 188 countries into a Global Work Party. In far-flung places, people put up solar panels, dug community gardens and created bike paths to help reduce their carbon footprint and send a message to the world.

The website (350.org) states, “Three years ago, after leading climatologists observed rapid ice melt in the Arctic and other frightening signs of climate change, they issued a series of studies showing that the planet faced both human and natural disaster if atmospheric concentrations of CO2 remained above 350 parts per million. Everyone from Al Gore to the U.N.’s top climate scientist has now embraced this goal as necessary for stabilizing the planet and preventing complete disaster. At (350.org), we're building a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis and push for policies that will put the world on track to get to 350 ppm.”

You can see some terrific photos of the way individuals around the world are preparing for the big day including those of our own Wilmette group using kayaks to form "350."  For the global images gallery go to:(moving-planet.org).

You, too, can be in the photo that will be added to the site.  All you need to do is be at the Wallace Bowl, Gillson Park at 2 p.m..  See you there.
