High Temps Prompt Special Weather Alert

Extreme heat expected in Cook and Lake Counties Tuesday and Wednesday.

With temperatures creeping into the mid-90's, the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Cook and Lake Counties on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The hot and humid weather will continue, causing the heat index to reach 100 degrees. Meanwhile southwest winds will prevent Lake Michigan's usual breeze from cooling down the area. Additionally, little relief is expected to come in the evening, with temperatures expected to stay in the mid-70s.

Here are some tips from the American Red Cross for staying cool and safe in hot weather:

  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, and a hat or umbrella if you can.
  • Stay hydrated -- drink water even when you don't feel thirsty. Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
  • Save your workout or any strenuous activity for the coolest times of the day.
  • Find somewhere air conditioned or stay on the lowest floor of your house and out of the sun if you do not have air conditioning.
  • Eat smaller meals and avoid high-protein foods.
  • Check on your neighbors. Keep each other safe.
