Interactive Map Shows Dropping Home Prices By Community

Glenview was the only Chicago area community to see prices improve.

Home prices in the Chicago suburbs continued to fall during the first six months of the year, according to an article in Crain's Chicago Business. An interactive map with the article allows you to type in your zip code to see how home prices near you are faring.

Interestingly, the only Chicago-area zip code to see an improvement was Glenview's 60025, where home prices went up 0.4%. The median home price there is $485,000, according to the article.

The map includes information for all six Chicago-area counties.

I write a blog where I post month-by-month market statistics for housing, and yes, prices are still coming down. Some months they are slightly up, but mostly down and by the end of the year there will be a overall decline. However, prices are not plummeting anymore - just sliding and bumping along at the bottom.

North Shore homes prices went up by a few percentage points in 2010 and then went down by a few percentage points in 2011. Essentially we have been bouncing along the bottom for over 2 years with small moves up and down. This will likely continue for the foreseeable future. With rates at all time lows, it is a great time to buy and will pay off well in the long run. But economic uncertainties, difficulties getting a mortgage, and the stagnant market have kept many people from buying or considering a trade up. I am a Realtor and track the market carefully. I post quarterly market reports on my website.

John, Any sense of when the District 39 referendum will bump home values up? That was really one of the big selling points on the issue for a lot of people.
