North Shore Author Honored in Springfield

Wilmette Author Marlene Targ Brill was honored as part of the first statewide literacy program.

Marlene Targ Brill, a Wilmette author, was honored at the Old State Capitol in Springfield on March 18 for the launch of Illinois Reads, the first statewide literacy program. 

Brill's illustrated children's book, Tooth Tales from Around the World, was one of six children's books selected for the program, which is aimed for children in kindergarten through second grade. (There are other books selected for the program that target younger and older children, as well as adults.)

Brill has written over 70 books, mostly for children and has won several national writing awards. Some of her other popular titles are Barack Obama: President for a New Era, Diary of a Drummer Boy, Bronco Charlie and the Pony Express and Annie Shapiro and the Clothing Workers Strike.

The five other books were selected as part of the kindergarten through 2nd grade program, including Bugs and Us by Patricia Murphy, Henry and the Buccaneer Bunnies by Carolyn Crimi, Chicks and Salsa by Aaron Reynolds, Another Brother by Matthew Cordwell and The Ugly Duckling Dinosaur by Cheryl Bardoe.
