Photos of the Day: Lightning Strikes Wilmette Resident's Tree

Lightning struck the tree during Saturday morning's storm.

Lightning struck a tree in the front of a Wilmette home on Schiller Road near Hunter Road and Lake Avenue during Saturday's storm, one Patch reader reports. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. the Wilmettan, who sent along the above photos, said.

"One neighbor reported seeing the [lightning] strike through her window and said the lightning looked red," said the reader, who was out running errands during the storm.

"When the storm struck my daughters retreated to the basement and were there when the lightning hit the tree. They both said the felt the electricity surge through them, the tree is about 25 feet from the basement and its roots reach up to the house." he said in an email, "My wife as well as nearby neighbors reported a very loud crash of thunder that shook the house."
