Terri Weinstein, owner and mastermind behind Terri Weinstein Design, Inc. of Highland Park, spent an entire year making a Winnetka home on Old Green Bay Road a labor of love.
“It was incredible,” said Weinstein, a 1965 graduate, of the project. “I had worked with the homeowners before when we redid their kitchen, so I have a long, ongoing relationship with them. When they decided to have another child, expand their sunroom and master bedroom suite and increase the number of children’s rooms, we did the major expansion project.”
Weinstein kept the exact address of the home on Old Green Bay Road and the project’s budget under wraps to maintain client confidentiality. However, she says she has a special work relationship with the family of five that made the design work more like play.
As a graduate of Washington University and with a Masters of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Weinstein has a long list of credits on her resume. From the pages of the New York Times to a sting with Playboy Magazine as a photographic stylist, she knows design.
However, Weinstein started calling herself “Boss” in 1979, and now operates her business in both Chicago and Miami. She says her favorite part about the job is when she has passionate clients, much like the homeowners in Winnetka.
“What makes it so easy is when you have really receptive clients and there’s collaboration going on between the clients, designer and architect,” Weinstein said. “We had a lot of fun together. They were really enthusiastic and made the project more fun.”
Weinstein, joined by architect Jennifer McCormick, completely transformed the house for the Winnetka family with three young boys. She worked to make the home “child-friendly, and attractive from a child’s point of view.”
