Sheridan Road Opens Up to Two Lanes Today

The $3.24-million water main improvement project's last phase on Sheridan Road is near completion, and residents, motorists, walkers and bikers will now be able to move more freely in the area.

Today, Sheridan Road is going to look a lot different than it has for the last few months.

That's because the final phase of a $3.24-million water main improvement project is nearing completion, and two lanes of traffic will — at long last — be opened up for those who travel the area.

"We’re going to be taking the barricades and detour signs down, which ends a long summer of construction work," said Christine Van Dornick, village enginner.

The project began in June.

The water main under Sheridan Road between Beach Road and Lake Cook Road was doubled from six to 12 inches. Van Dornick said water pressure and firefighting abilities will dramatically improve, along with better service for larger users nearby such as North Shore Israel congregation and the neighboring golf course.

The final phase of the project includes completing permanent tie-in connections at Franklin Road and Brentwood Lane, Van Dornick said.

"Flaggers will be on Franklin Road where the connections will be made, in addition to Brentwood Lane, but traffic flow will not be affected," Van Dornick said.

The Sheridan Road piece of the projected represented roughly half of the total cost, Van Dornick said. Other areas already completed include two locations on South Avenue in addition to Surfside Place, Washington, Jefferson, Randolph Street and Old Green Bay Road.
