Wilmette Least Charitable Town on the North Shore

A national ranking of most giving zip codes shows Kenilworth is among the top donors of surrounding North Shore communities. Based on the amount of money donated, Wilmette and Kenilworth residents gave more than the national or Cook County average.

Wilmette residents gave 3.6 percent of their income, the least amount based on percentage of income given when compared with neighbors on the North Shore, according to 'How America Gives,' a study from the Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Based on the study Wilmette ranks at No. 274 of 28,725 zip codes ranked throughout the country, donating a total of $62.2 million and made a median contribution of $7,103.

Regionally, Kenilworth is among is the most charitable town among surrounding communities with 5 percent of income given, donating a total of $18.9 million, and a median contribution of $25,968.

The study shows how states, cities and neighborhoods rank in generosity using data by zip code, income level and charity given, taken directly from 2008 tax records. The study also uses factors like amount of discretionary income and can also be broken down by income level, age and race.

Based on the amount of money donated, Wilmette and Kenilworth residents gave more than the national or Cook County average.
