Wilmette Library to Offer Series Exploring Muslim Culture

Wilmette Public Library has been selected to receive the Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA).

Wilmette Public Library will offer a series exploring Muslim culture thanks to grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association.

Betty Giorgi, library spokeswoman told Wilmette Life that the series, which is set to start in September, is expected to be popular with Wilmette residents because it attempts to look at the wide variety of the Muslim community not only here but around the word.

The library was among 840 nationwide to win a Bridging Cultures bookshelf grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York and in May library officials learned that it was one of 125 entitles to win a further $3,500 grant from the NEH and the ALA, the newspaper reported.

The Bookshelf grant includes includes 25 books, 3 films, and a one year subscription to Oxford Islamic Studies Online, according to the library’s website. The collection is located in the Recent Arrivals area of the Library.

Get a preview of the series with the screening of Prince Among Slaves at 7 p.m., June 19 at Wilmette Public Library. The documentary is about a prince who was sold into slavery in the 18th century.
