Wilmette Rotary Club Awards 2014 High School Scholarships

Five scholarships were awarded to students at New Trier, Loyola Academy and Regina Dominican High School.

The Wilmette Rotary Club awarded 2014 scholarships to five outstanding students from New Trier, Loyola Academy and Regina Dominican High Schools. The ceremony was attended by winning students, parents and Rotary Club members.

For 33 years, Wilmette Rotary has honored local students with academic scholarships. Nominations came from their college counselors who praised students for leadership, responsibility, work ethic, creativity and making the world a better place to live.

New Trier High School winners include Michael Deegan Ulrich, a senior mentor who also heads canned food drives, channels sports cards to ill and disadvantaged children and organizes a 5K race to benefit a disabled child.  Sieun Ruth Lee came to the U.S. as a sixth grader not knowing English and since excelled in the most rigorous curriculum at New Trier.  She tutors peers, participates in Asian Youth Services and her church, and volunteers in a Northwestern campus kitchen.

Loyola Academy winner Patrick Kennedy takes many honors and advance placement classes, serves on the student council and volunteers in family and homeless youth programs.

Regina Dominican winner Seunglee Lee is a student reporter for a Korean newspaper, translates You Tube videos and supports children in impoverished countries.  Mary Hager is concerned with social justice and feeds the homeless along Lower Wacker Drive, volunteers in a food bank, visits retired church Sisters, is a church cantor and participates in school musicals.

The Wilmette Rotary Club was founded in 1924 and conducts international, community, vocational and club service projects.  Members meet noon Wednesdays at McCormick & Schmick’s Restaurant in Old Orchard.  For information, check www.wilmetterotary.org.
