"Don't Act Like A Girl"--a one person show from Annoyance Theatre at The Wilmette Theatre

Annoyance Theatre in Residence presentsDON’T ACT LIKE A GIRL "Perry's deadpan comic timing and askew anecdotes are hilarious under Tim Paul's fine direction. Also, the visual progression of a bearish Perry singing and applying makeup to ultimately appear in drag by the end is also a lot of fun." – Windy City Times "Don't act like a girl" was the only stipulation Wes Perry's father offered when his teenage son came out. This one-man show with a live three person band flashes back to the life of an awkward young loner who is misdiagnosed, over prescribed and misunderstood until a fatal trip to fat camp ultimately changes his life. A night full of monologues and songs telling true stories of special education, musical theatre, 9/11 and teenage drag queens. And plenty of confetti.  Written and performed by Wes Perry. Directed by Annoyance veteran Tim Paul, with musical direction by Charles Worth. "In the age of daytime talk shows and reality TV, homosexuality and a drug problem are hardly eyebrow raising. But under the direction of Tim Paul, Perry employs a few admirable tricks to keep the audience engaged. He's a got a three-piece band on hand and isn't afraid to belt out a montage of pop anthem's like Heart's "Crazy on You," Patsy Cline's "Crazy" or Beyonce's "Crazy in Love" while engaging his pill bottles like they're maracas. By the time of the show's finale, in which Perry describes his role as a show-stopping wicked witch in a school production of The Wiz, 60 minutes have literally flown by and we're applauding this nifty slice of underdog theater" –Time Out Chicago
