Marriott Inn to Break Ground In Wilmette

The target date for the new development is 2012.

An undeveloped site in west Wilmette is set to transform into a 130-unit Marriott Residence Inn, according to a statement released Friday from the Village.

White Lodging Services Corporation, the company building the hotel, selected 1.6 acres of land located at 3201 Old Glenview Road for the six-story, all-suite inn. Early 2012 has been set as a target date for crews to break ground on the new development.

“This is exactly the type of business development and investment that I have been working on since I was first elected. By constructing this hotel, White Lodging will convert an unimproved parcel of land in Wilmette into a property that will not only greatly benefit business travelers, but will also benefit Wilmette residents and family and friends visiting our residents," said Village President Chirs Canning in a press release.

Canning added that the business will generate real estate and hotel tax revenues "to pay for needed Village services.”

Meanwhile White Lodging and Wilmette are preparing a development agreement that include an occupancy tax to help offset construction costs, according to the press release.

“Using such a development agreement is an effective tool used by many municipalities to spur new hotel development," said Village Manager Tim Frenzer in the release."An occupancy tax is not paid by Village residents, but does generate revenue to support Village services and make the new construction economically feasible.”

For now White Lodging must compile a packet of information for its Planned Unit Development Ordinance application, which will be reviewed by the Village's Plan Commission and Board.

“The addition of the 130 room hotel is yet another great reason to come and visit our Village and will make Wilmette an optimal choice for business travelers," Canning said, "I look forward to working with the Village Board, staff and the community to make this hotel a reality.”
