Weinstein Funeral Home Employees Consider Strike

A change in health and welfare benefits has prompted workers to take a strike vote June 16.

Employees from four Alderwoods funeral homes will decide Thursday whether or not to strike because of health and benefit changes the company made, according to a statement released Wednesday from Teamsters Local 727.

One of those facilities includes in Wilmette, where Teamsters rallied last week in support of the workers. According to the Teamsters' statement, "Alderwoods, which is owned by funeral industry giant Service Corporation International (NYSE: SCI) and operates under the Dignity brand name, replaced the 17 employees' union health care with more expensive and less comprehensive coverage through the company."

The union argues that a return to its previous health care plan would save workers, as well as the company money. Meanwhile employees' three-year contracts are set to expire June 30.
