Pet First Aid and Other Lectures Offered at Chalet in August

Giving new meaning to the term “dog days of summer,” Chalet in Wilmette is offering a series of lectures and workshops related to the health and comfort of dogs and other pets during the month of August.

August is officially Pet Month at Chalet, which recently expanded and improved its award-winning Pet Essentials department to include a greater variety of products, spanning pet foods, toys, leashes and collars, bedding, grooming and health items and more. Chalet’s own African Gray Parrot, “Kazoo” has settled into his new digs and will be on hand (or perch, as it may be) to greet customers.

Throughout August, Chalet is offering a special series of pet-related programs in its Education Center, including:

·        “Canine Massage”: Friday, Aug. 2 and Saturday, Aug. 3, 10 to 11:30 a.m. In this free lecture, presenter Douglas Moss, a Certified Small Animal Massage Therapist and owner of WellSpring Canine Massage LLC, will teach and demonstrate the benefits of canine massage. Moss will use demonstration dogs and stuffed toy dogs to show dog owners the proper techniques to use on their pets.

·        “Knowing Your Pet’s Health”: Friday, Aug. 9 and Saturday, Aug. 10, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Susan Frank, host of Talkzone.com's "Wild About Pets Radio Show" and a Certified Pet Tech Pet First Aid instructor, will show pet owners how to do a “snout to tail” assessment, how to check a pet's vital signs; and why the ingredients in pet foods matter.  The lecture is free.

·        “Pet CPR and First Aid Workshop”: Saturday, Aug. 24, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Learn pet First Aid and care to help you and your pet in an emergency situation. Training from Pet Tech First Aid Instructor Susan Frank includes a lecture, demonstration and hands-on skill practice that covers the three styles of pet CPR, rescue breathing, choking managing and the ABCs of pet First Aid. The $59 fee for this workshop includes instruction plus a take-home workbook and a completion certificate valid for two years.  Light refreshments will be served.
