Family Poisoned by Carbon Monoxide

A family was poisoned by carbon monoxide in their home. All three are expected to make a full recovery.

Three Wilmette residents were brought to the hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning after a gasoline generator running in the basement of their home caused the toxic gas to leak into the house, police reports state.

One adult male was found unresponsive in the kitchen of the home on the 500 block of Karey Ct. on June 26. An adult female asleep in the upstairs bedroom showed elevated levels of Carbon Monoxide. The adults, along with their son, were transported by the Wilmette Fire Department paramedics. The 62-year-old father was later transferredto Lutheran General Hospital.

All three are expected to recover.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency advises that if you think that you've been exposed to carbon monoxide, leave the house immediate and get fresh air, and go straight to an emergency room.

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning include severe headaches, dizziness, confusion, nausea, fainting and shortness of breath. The symptoms can be similar to the flu or food poisoning.

Carbon Monoxide is produced whenever a fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood or charcoal is burned. The amount released is typically not hazardous, but if appliances are not working properly, the gas can be released, according to the EPA
