Groupon Cancels Gun-Related Deals

Groupon Inc. has canceled all its firearm-related offers a month after the school massacre in Newtown, Conn., the LA Times reported.

“All scheduled and current gun-related deals featured on Groupon North America, including shooting ranges, conceal-and-carry and clay shooting, have been placed on hiatus while we review internal standards that shape the deal inventory we feature, “ Groupon spokeswoman Julie Mossler in a statement issued to various media outlets

The Chicago-based daily deals company is not the first business to distance themselves from gun-related businesses. Dick’s Sporting Goods pulled some firearms off its stores’ shelves, while private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management sold its stake in the firearm conglomerate that made the rifle used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December, Slate reported.

Firearms remain a hot topic both nationally and locally. Gun ownership advocates recently packed a gun control panel held by the New Trier Democrats, where panelists included Nancy Bishop Langert, the sister of a Winnetka murder victim who is now a gun control activist.

"What do you think of companies such as Groupon distancing themselves from firearm-related business?" A private company can set whatever policy it wants just as any consumer can choose what company to do business with. I know what I've chosen...

Considering that there are 60 million gun owners in the U.S. - a poor decision to alienate such a large base of customers. Especially considering that the deals offered by Groupon were for training and introduction to safe shooting which are beneficial and cause no harm. Another over-reaction by a company that will harm its profits and provide its competitors with more revenue. I too get to make choices with how I spend my money - I have chosen to no longer use Groupon. Companies who do not support the Constitution of the United States do not need my money.

While your at it, distance yourself from establishments that sell alcohol as people have gotten drunk there and then driven home. If a company follows the law, pays its taxes, etc. to not allow it to advertise is discriminatory.

Groupon is almost gone anyway. This latest move is probably a desperate attempt at some free publicity. It doesn't matter what laws are passed, what prohibitions are in place. People who want weapons will still have those weapons. We have made so many laws and regulations that they've made themselves irrelevent. Laws only affect the law abiding.

What is most disturbing is the bullying tactics used by those who oppose the purchase of a lawful product for proper purposes - self defense or sport. The "heckler's veto" threatens to give inordinate power to a loud, often nasty, minority. People need to muster the courage to stand up and be heard and not allow bullies to prevail.

Cassy Murphy wrote on Facebook, "Weird. I guess if they want to lose more money...that's their decision. Many of those deals were courses on how to properly use a firearm and educate people...something that is very important!"

BOYCOTT CHICAGO. With the worst Police Detectives in the recent history, 75% of Murders go unsolved. With the Worst Conviction Rate in the History of the State... 6% of Violent Criminals Arrested and Charged, end up with a conviction. You want to disarm me and my family, when the Justice system is unreliable and broken. Sorry, but when that murder busts into my home and walks towards me with a weapon, he will be leaving horizontal on a gurny. Convicted, Evicted and eradicated.

We were heard in Glenview, but a negative reporting by the media, takes away from the Patriotism of standing up for your Right's. Never the less, we continue to fight on.

The Constitution gives us unalienable Right's and the Second amendment is very clear in the "Shall not be infringed" portion. I esspecially like the "Militia" Portion, that many people do not comprehend... Illinois Militia, as specified in the Illinois Constitution, Article12. We are the residents of this state, the able bodied persons, in the state militia. Like it or not, that is what our state constitution says and what our US Constitution means.

Good for Groupon! Perhaps this is a good way to convince the gun sellers that they should accept some "common sense" gun laws in their repertoire. What is needed is more commercial pressure on the gun sellers of America that convinces them that most of the American people think that gun ownership of assault rifles is unnecessary.
