Readers Weigh in on Weapons Ban in Wilmette

Patch commenters agreed — an assault weapons ban should not be passed in Wilmette. Do you agree?

Several area towns — including SkokieEvanston and Deerfield — have been debating various gun bans for their cities. While residents in Evanston and Deerfield have spoken out about assault weapon bans, residents in Skokie have been debating conceal and carry laws.

Patch asked readers how they would feel about a weapons ban in Wilmette — and the commenters all weighed in as being against a ban.

Commenter Willie Wilmette said he thought if assault weapons were banned, everything would have to be banned.

"Every weapon is an assault weapon," he wrote. "Ban them all — guns, knives, and feet. Weren't more people kicked to death than killed with 'assault weapons'?"

Commenter Layna LaPage believes that the issue shouldn't be debated at a local level.

"The Supreme Court has already debated this topic," she wrote. "We are guaranteed the right to bear arms according to the Constitition. This ends this debate. It is now the law of the land."

Commenter Fred also believes that assault weapons should not be banned.

"Think for a moment that while you are alone at night, that someone is attempting to break in," he wrote. "The door crashes open, and two or three thugs run toward you with bats. Your scream will not stop them, 911 will not stop them, a gun will."
