Wilmette engineer John R. Hillman was recently honored at the White House as one of 12 “Champions of Change” from across America for their innovations in transportation technology, Chicago Tribune reported.

Hillman invented the Hybrid-Composite Beam, which he describes as a structural technology that helps build stronger, lighter, safer and longer-lasting bridges. He first came up with the idea in 1996 but more than a decade before the beam, which is constructed as a composite from steel strands, concrete and fiber reinforced polymer, was deployed on a bridge, Chicago Tribune reported.
