Crimes and Misdemeanors (Spirituality on film series)

Film Series, discussions led by Reid Schultz of Columbia College

Movie Directed by Woody Allen, 1989, 100 min.

This American film tells two stories in one.  Married ophthalmologist Judah is having an affair. When his mistress threatens to expose him if he doesn't marry her, he turns to his brother Jack who proposes a plan to make her go away, permanently. This easy but horrifying answer to his problems challenges his belief that the eyes of God are always upon him. In the accompanying story, Clifford is a struggling documentary filmmaker who despises his shallow but successful brother-in-law who offers him the job of a lifetime. Will he sell out or remain true to his values and desires? The film becomes a contemplative discourse on life and the themes of right and wrong, along with the morality of making decisions regardless of the consequences of our behavior.
