Lecture on the Potawatomi and the 19th Century Fur Trade

Join us for a fascinating lecture on Potawatomi Native Americans and their interaction with Europeans Euro-Americans, presented by Dr. Robert F. Sasso, Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha.

Dr. Sasso will share his knowledge of early nineteenth century Potawatomi life, including the places where they lived, grew maize and other crops, hunted, trapped, fished, gathered wild plant foods, and conducted ceremonies. He will also discuss his field work at the fur trade post at Skunk Grove near Racine, Wisconsin. The post was run by members of one of the most famous fur trading family in Wisconsin, the Vieau family. The Vieaus were contemporaries of the Ouilmettes, knew one another, and almost certainly shared many aspects of the fur trade lifestyle.
