My Night at Maud's (Spirituality on Film Series)

My Night at Maud's

Directed by Eric Rohmer, France, 1969, 105 min.

The third of Rohmer's "Six Moral Tales," in which he grappled with the experience of living under the watchful eye of God. Mathematician Jean-Louis is a devout Catholic who one night meets a smart, pretty divorced doctor named Maud. As the night goes along, Jean-Marie and Maud become more and more attracted to each other as they spend the night discussing everything about life and existence. This deeply philosophical film presents a fascinating, clever, and insightful examination of faith, love, and morality in society and the profound and exhilarating ways that destined meetings with strangers can derail life into wonderful new directions. In French with English subtitles.  Watch the film, along with lecture and discussion led by Reid Schultz.
