Stained Glass Presentation and Wilmette Preservation Awards

The Wilmette Historical Museum and the Historic Preservation Commission will host the 21st annual Preservation Awards Ceremony on Sunday, October 20, 2013 from 2:00-3:30 p.m., at the Wilmette Historical Museum, 609 Ridge Road. The event is free and open to the public. No reservations are necessary and light refreshments will be served.

This fall, residents of Wilmette were invited to nominate buildings, gardens, and/or landscapes that reflected or enhanced the historic character of the Village. The nominations were judged by a panel of preservation professionals. At the Awards Ceremony, the owners of the winning properties will receive certificates of recognition from the Wilmette Historic Preservation Commission. Eligible categories were stewardship, restoration, sympathetic addition, and streetscape compatibility.

Following the awards ceremony, Rolf Achilles, independent art historian and curator of the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows, will present a captivating lecture on "Chicago Stained Glass and Sacred Spaces." Achilles lectures at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and serves as an advisor on interior preservation, among many other pursuits. This lecture will illuminate the histories of stained glass inside some of the Chicago area's most beautiful churches and cathedrals.
