University Guild Program: Holiday Music with Shirlee Todd, Jazmer

Please
attend the University Guild program Share
the Joys of the Holidays
with Shirlee Todd, vocalist and leader of Jazmer,
on  Monday, December 2, at 1:30 pm in the
University Guild Lounge
in Scott Hall, 601 University Place, on
Northwestern University’s beautiful campus.   As in
previous years, the holiday table decorations will be raffled off with the
proceeds going to the University Guild’s scholarship fund.

  Please plan on participating!

Kick
off the holiday season with music and education.  Shirlee Todd has pulled a program together
especially for us.  She will perform
music from all the upcoming holidays and tell us the history of the songs and
music.

Shirlee,
with an accompanist, will perform the music of the holidays in both English,
Spanish and Yiddish.  For
Shirlee, music and languages seem to go hand in hand. She comes from a
bilingual home where both English and Yiddish were spoken, and she has
performed in those languages since childhood. She also performs in Spanish,
which she speaks fluently, as well as Russian, ladino (judeo espanol) and
Hebrew. Her cantorial experience comes from being the lead soloist for Cantor
Dale Lind for over 12 years. She also opened for the Zim Brothers and the Andy
Statman Klezmer Band at the Old Town School of Music. Before co-founding Jazmer
with Don Jacobs, she was the lead vocalist for M’Chaiya. In addition to working
with Jazmer, she is part of a piano-vocal duo which performs music from the
Great American Songbook, jazz standards, show tunes and international music for
private parties, organizations and special events.

Mother Jones (1837-1930) was a labor leader.
She was a spectacular, controversial woman in an occupation – and a time –
filled with danger.  Come hear The March of the Mill Children, a speech
by Mother Jones, adapted and
performed by Betsey Means.  Web
