Earth Day Events and more from Go Green Wilmett

Earth Day/Week is just ahead – April 22nd. Wilmette schools are planning to do their part to celebrate in many ways.

Spring is making itself known with lots of rain and green peeking out in many places.  And Earth Day/Week is just ahead – April 22nd.  Wilmette schools are planning to do their part as follows.

Jennifer Lind, Environmental Awareness PTO volunteer, shared that “Wilmette Junior High School is organizing a spring clean up of the grounds on Monday and Tuesday, April 22nd and 23rd.  Parents and students will do this together during the lunch and recess periods.  We've organized this with Assistant Principal Kelly Jackson.”

 

At Highcrest Middle School, students will be composting food waste from the cafeteria to use on native plants in the prairie garden, collecting gently used shoes to be reused, and setting up bird feeders and planting vegetable seeds in the Outdoor Classrsoom.

Harper School will hold a fair with interactive stations hosted by teachers, parents and students.  Stations to include birding, camping, seed planting, fishing
local places to go with birding, camping etc highlighted on a map of the north shore and suburbs.  Watch for games, a storytime and Student Nature Photos. Girls on the Run are collecting athletic shoes for Nike Grind.

McKenzie School will celebrate Earth Day is all week with these activities: Students will pledge on the Green Pledge Tree, Waste-Free Lunch, composting, arts and crafts, NO IDLING reminders, and collection for Nike Grind

Romona School will do their part when they collect used athletic shoes for Nike Grind.

Central School students will pledge to "Do One Thing" (DOT) for planet Earth.
Pledges are “seeds" to coincide with the school-wide reading of "Seed by Seed" book.  Other activities will include planting of herb and sunflower seeds in pots in classrooms, walk to school parade, recycle relays in PE, Waste-Free Lunch and Composting, chalk murals and messages at recess. There will be a worn athletic shoe collection for Nike Grind and No Idling reminders also.


All are looking forward to a warm and sunny Earth Day!
