Go Green Wilmette is Busy – Summerfest and More

There is so much to see and do at Summerfest, Wilmette’s summer event. An important stop is the Go Green Wilmette  (GGW) booth near the intersection of Central & Wilmette Avenue by Dinner at Eight. Three volunteers were in place late Friday afternoon sharing information about the FREE raffle for a rain barrel.

Visitors were very interested in the rain barrel raffle, and people who have had experience using rain barrels shared their stories Visitors to the booth were also very interested in information about GMO's (genetically modified foods) and eating organically.  Currently, there is much discussion in Springfield about a bill that would require the labeling of genetically engineered foods.  Children enjoyed using the stickers, especially the phantom energy stickers.

Two upcoming events were shared and discussed with visitors.  On Saturday, July 20th, at 10:00 a.m., the Wilmette Library will host an “Introduction to Birding” presented by Karen Glennemeier, Audubon scientist and Wilmette resident.  She will introduce the common local birds, the best places to find them as well as helpful equipment. All ages are welcome.

The second event is an unusual garden walk on Sunday, July 21st.  As it says on the Go Green Wilmette website, the gardens will range from wildlife habitats to prairie gardens, from rainwater diversion and retention to homegrown food, Wilmette residents are putting their yards to work for practical and delicious purposes with beautiful results. You are invited to join your friends and neighbors for a FREE tour of eight innovative yards in Wilmette. Bring your questions and leave inspired to put your own yard to work. Visit participants' yards on your own or join one of two guided bike tours, which will depart from Starbucks (Plaza del Lago) and Wilmette Public Library promptly at 9:00 a.m. Tour addresses, yard descriptions and a map will be posted three days before the event on the Go Green website at www.gogreenwilmette.org

These are great opportunities to enhance your summer.
