Go Green Wilmette joins The Little Garden Club of Wilmette

Many members of Go Green Wilmette joined members of garden clubs and groups from local Audubon Society chapters and other groups when, on August 26, 2013, The Little Garden Club of Wilmette arranged for Charlotte Adelman, co-author of The Midwestern Native Garden, Native Alternatives to Nonnative Flowers and Plants, An Illustrated Guide (Ohio University Press) to lead a tour of Wilmette's Centennial Park Prairie located in Wilmette at Wilmette and Crawford Avenues in Wilmette.  This was a pleasant and enlightening experience.

 

Seeing the prairie was fascinating and there was so much to learn.  For example, Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on only one plant, which is milkweed.  Milkweed is often regarded as a weed and, sadly, pulled from gardens.  Goldenrod is a beautiful plant and it is not ragweed, although ragweed has many positive benefits.  So many prairie plants are lovely and can be used instead of non-native varieties.  Switchgrass is among 20 native grasses that look terrific

Charlotte distributed the “Native Gardener’s Companion, Spring 2013 to help her audience locate plants and to find out about ordering them. (www.prairemoon.com) Charlotte’s book is a wonderful resources and beautiful to look through.
