North Shore Author Lectures on America's Worst War

Dennis Byrne will discuss the War of 1812 and his book on the subject at the North Shore Senior Center on Tuesday.

Chicago Tribune contributing columnist and Northbrook resident Dennis Byrne will talk about what may have may have been America’s worst and most nearly ruinous war, as described in his historical novel, Madness: The War of 1812.

Even worse than the Vietnam and Iraq wars? As he writes in Madness:

“Never in the history of American warfare has this nation witnessed such an exhibition of cowardice, indecisiveness, incompetence, and laziness in the army’s senior officer ranks. Battle after battle was lost, untrained troops were sacrificed in fights they could never win, territories won were quickly squandered, and the chain of command was ignored to near-treasonous levels.”

Byrne will explain why America’s least remembered and understood, most ill-conceived and poorly remembered war also may be the nation’s most important war.

The free lecture will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the North Shore Senior Center, 161 Northfield Rd. in Northfield.
