Memorial in Washington D.C. Set for Elissa Froman

The Wilmette native was known by friends as a civil rights activist and a leader for social justice.

She spent her career advocating for social change as a legislative associate with the National Council of Jewish Women and the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism in Washington, D.C., and planned to bring her passion for social change to the pulpit.

A group of Froman's friends will be hosting a memorial in Washington D.C. to celebrate her life. The event is receiving support from Froman's former employers, including the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, the National Council of Jewish Women and Jews United for Justice (an organization for which Froman was a volunteer leader).

"Elissa built an incredible community in Washington and, as a civil rights lobbyist, was also a very effective advocate and crusader for social justice," Beth Kurtz, Froman's friend and an organizer of the memorial. "We hope that this event will pay tribute to her personal and professional life."

The D.C. event will be held at the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue on Sunday June 2 at 10 a.m.

"Elissa passed away on March 22, 2013, but her impact on her community will live on in the hearts and minds of her friends, family and colleagues," the invitation to the event reads. "Please join us for a short memorial to commemorate her incredible life and her contributions to the world. All are welcome."
