Wilmette Obituary: J.D. MacDonald, 84

James Daniel “J.D.” MacDonald of Wilmette, Illinois died on April 24, 2014. He was born on February 13, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to Genevieve Murphy MacDonald and Edward King MacDonald. J. D. graduated from Lake Forest Academy in 1948 and from Hobart University in 1952, where he received a B.A. with a major in history and international relations. He married Charlotte Mary (Charie) Roberson on April 8, 1961 in Wilmette, Illinois. 

J.D. served our country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force in Europe before launching his investment career with Harriman, Ripley & Co. where he developed a keen eye for investment opportunities and a reputation for client-focused counsel. He was awarded the Chartered Investment Counselor designation by the Investment Counsel Association of America in 1976. In the years that followed, J. D. brought to investment management the same traits that marked his life outside the office: poise, integrity and a dash of style. 

In 2007, he entered into a retirement agreement with the remaining partners at Roberts, Glore & Co. This gave him time to indulge his passions for woodworking, world travel and hunting. He is a member of the Raleigh Tavern Society of Colonial Williamsburg and a Life Member of the Ruffed Grouse Society. 

He is survived by his wife, Charie, his daughter, Mary King MacDonald Squire of Rye, N.Y., his son, David Dittmar MacDonald of Bluemont, VA, his son Daniel Murphy MacDonald of Chicago and his seven granddaughters, Charlotte, Lilly and Grace MacDonald, Claire and Maddie Squire and Piper and Nuala MacDonald. 

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care Center, 2050 Claire Courtt., Glenview, IL 60026.
