Chicago Man Arrested in Connection with Attempted Robbery, Battery in Wilmette

arrested a Chicago man in connection with an attempted robbery and a separate battery incident that occurred around Linden Avenue on July 5. 

Martise E. Lowe, 20, of 703 N. Central Park Avenue, Chicago, was charged with a felony charge of attempted robbery and a misdemeanor charge of battery. He remains in Cook County Sheriff Police custody on a $50,000 bond. He was issued a July 19 court date in Skokie.

Wilmette police said they responded to a report of a strong-arm robbery around 5th Street and Linden Avenue at 6:44 a.m. on July 5.

The victim, a 65-year-old Wilmette resident, told police an African American man in his 20’s wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans walked towards her while she was walking eastbound in the 600 block of Linden Avenue, asked her for direction and then attempted to grab and pull off her backpack-style purse. After a brief tug of war, the victim said the offender released his grip of the strap and fled westbound on Linden Avenue. 

Responding officers saw a person matching the victim’s description going southbound on 7th Street toward Laurel Avenue, according to police. While the person was stopped, the Wilmette resident identified Lowe as the offender in the robbery. 

After Lowe was taken into custody for attempted robbery, another Wilmette resident reported to police that while jogging in the 700 block of Linden Avenue between 6:30 a.m. and 6:50 a.m. on July 5, a man in his 20’s stepped in front of her and then grabbed her left breast, police said. 

That woman identified Lowe as the offender, according to police.
