Imitation Plumbers, Identity Theft, Phone Scam

The following information was provided by the Wilmette Police Department. When an arrest is mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Identity Theft

A victim from the 3000 block of Iroquois St. reported to Wilmette Police that an unknown person had used their debit card and pin number to make numerous purchases from the iTunes store on Feb. 6 through Feb. 13, reports state. Information may have been taken when the victim gave the card and pin information to pay a bill. 

Lost or Stolen Property

A victim reported that her wallet was lost or stolen during a train ride downtown on the Metra train on either Feb. 21 or Feb. 22, Wilmette Police reports state. 

Attempted Ruse Burglary

Two subjects who identified themselves as plumbers came to a residence on the 600 block of Hibbard Rd. on Feb. 26, Wilmette Police reports state. They were admitted by the elderly female resident. They left a short time after, and nothing appears to have been taken. No plumbing work was ordered for the house. 

Theft

The school principal at Harper School at 1133 Dartmouth Rd. reported that a teacher put her laptop computer in the cabinet in the back of the room when she left Friday evening (Feb. 22), Wilmette Police reports state. When she returned Monday (Feb. 25), she found that the door was locked but the computer was missing. 

Information for Police

A resident on the 1100 block of Michigan Ave. reported to police that he believes he was the victim of a phone solicitation scam on Feb. 27, police reports state. A caller with a thick accent stated that he would fix the victim's computer and the victim allowed him remote access to his computer. When the caller stated that the cost would be $400 or $200 with a 2-year tech-support, the victim became suspicious and hung up the phone. He then contacted his bank and changed all of his passwords. The number being registered belongs to a company in India and is being investigated by the FTC for similar problems.
